The work of Gilbert and Sullivan is often seen as trivial and inconsequential. This lecture by distinguished musicologist Paul Drayton and academic Andy Lancaster challenges this evaluation by exploring particularly The Gondoliers, an opera showing later in the week in Falmouth.
We explore G and S’s response to the very contemporary question ‘Do we really need a monarchy?’
