My Helford Sketchbook with Sophie Velzian

Join local artist and landscape painter Sophie Velzian for an intimate exploration of her first publication, My Helford Sketchbook—a visual love letter to the Helford River and its surrounding Cornish landscapes. In this artist talk, Sophie will share the creative journey behind the book, which captures a year of painting using gouache en plein air, across woodlands, creeks, and coastal paths. These sensitive paintings, each accompanied with location photos and handwritten reflections, are now published in a new book, which documents not only the changing seasons in colour and light but also the emotional resonance of place.

In this 90 minute talk, Sophie will delve into her artistic process, from fieldwork and observation to composition and storytelling. Sophie will discuss how sketchbooks serve as both personal diaries and tools for environmental connection, and the power of art to help with mental health and overcoming adversity. Inspired by the landscape painting traditions of Turner, Constable, the Impressionists, Sophie will share how she approaches a painting to capture the light and atmosphere. Attendees will gain insight into the challenges and joys of working outdoors, the role of spontaneity in her practice, and the importance of slowing down to truly see.

This event is ideal for nature lovers, artists, and anyone curious about the intersection of creativity and landscape. A Q&A session and book signing will follow the talk, offering a chance to engage directly with Sophie and her work. Copies of My Helford Sketchbook will be available for purchase and Sophie will bring her painting kit and actual sketchbooks with her to see in person.
