CFF: Black Tide

Special Ocean Screening at the Cornwall Film Festival Black Tide is an evening of elemental cinema — a powerful collection of films that delve into our deep and complex relationship with the ocean. Presented as part of the Cornwall Film Festival, this special programme invites audiences to surrender to the sea’s mysteries: its beauty, its resilience, and its fragility in the face of human ambition.

In IMMERSIVE, viewers plunge into the abyss to encounter the otherworldly ecosystems surrounding hydrothermal vents — realms where life exists without sunlight, now imperilled by the encroaching threat of deep-sea mining.

ROCK POOL shifts the focus to the intertidal, revealing a quiet universe of hidden rhythms and small miracles. Its meditative, non-narrative flow celebrates the extraordinary within the everyday through a hypnotic blend of sound and image.

Filmed in luminous black and white, OIL SPILL reflects on the 2021 Huntington Beach disaster. Through a silent, widescreen lens, it captures the uneasy coexistence of leisure and loss — beachgoers and cleanup crews sharing the same fragile stretch of coast. Completing the programme, filmmaker Clare Tavernor presents BLACK TIDE a new experimental work-in-progress, sounds and visual exploration revisiting the 1967 Torrey Canyon oil spill — a catastrophe that became a defining moment in environmental awareness and forever reshaped the nation’s relationship with the sea.
