Dir. David C. Schendel | 2025 | 95 mins plus Q&A | English
Tony Foster is a Cornwall-based artist and environmentalist who has spent a cumulative nine of the last thirty-five years living in a tadpole tent, using his art as a platform to advocate for the conservation of wild land and to raise awareness of the dangers of climate change.
Part explorer, part artist there is no living painter that works the way Tony does as he routinely risks his life to find the perfect undiscovered landscape.
Traveling slowly, carrying painting supplies and camping equipment, he paints in response to what he finds. He does not use photography or sketches but paints on site, often in the most difficult weather and uncomfortable circumstances.
From 2019 to 2023 David Schendel and his undaunted film crew shadowed Tony on several of his present-day painting expeditions, culminating in an 8-day, 100-mile canoe exploration of the Green River Wilderness to its confluence with the Colorado River in Utah, USA.
Responding to the necessities of shooting far from electrical outlets, Painting at the Edge is one of the only fully solar powered documentary productions ever completed.
The documentary seamlessly weaves together the life-story of Tony Foster with exotic archival footage, interviews and stunning never-before seen images of the world’s wildernesses.
Through their friendship and trust Tony and director David Schendel have created one of the most adventurous and intimate portraits of a living artist ever made.
Tony recently held an exhibition at Cornwall Museum called 'Tony Foster: Exploring Time' which focused on continuity and transformation in ourselves and the world around us.
This screening is followed by a Q&A with Tony Foster.
