VICTORIA GILLOW: TRACE

Tracing the landscape- Victoria works, mapping the landscape in real time, as well as aiming to acknowledge the traces of memory and time that are held by the landscape;

“I often start my work on location with a drawn line tracing the landscape, pathways and journeys up and over hills, headlands and out to sea. The line also traces the energy and feelings of this space.

"The traces both physical, capturing motifs and identifiable elements of a landscape, as well as the spiritual and emotion of places I know- the memories held and histories of past footfall that have left traces, that we sense in these places.  My feeling of connection, traces of memory, stories in the landscape, combine as new layered memories making a deeper connection."

About Victoria:

I am a Cornish painter, based in Falmouth. My art practice derives from a lifetime of looking and belonging with my Cornish heritage and love of the land and sea has informing my landscape and coastal paintings.  My work is about a life lived by the sea and my respect and love of the ocean, the Cornish Coast and its history. I aim to acknowledge the comfort of places one knows-the reverie of being completely immersed in a landscape.

I like to work en plein air – I walk, see and feel what is around me.  I allow myself time to stop and truly inhabit a place. My aim is to move less and see more- to sometimes stop walking and slowly absorb my surroundings.  My deep affinity with the places I know becomes even more profound with a unique and personal perspective that allies with truly knowing.  The hope is that others identify with this response too- my paintings capturing this response in actual time  (en plein air) as well as in reflection, back in my studio.

I have a BA in Fine Art, a PGCE in art and MA In Illustration Authorial Practice. I exhibit in Cornwall and nationally and work extensively in community arts and teaching,  as I am passionate about enabling creativity in others, working with schools, charities, community parks, hospitals and television, alongside my own work as an artist . I am currently working at The St Ives School of Painting and exhibiting with The Catharine Miller gallery in Chelsea and The Square gallery in St Mawes.
