'Sunsplash' featuring Sarah McDonagh
Philip Clouts – piano
Sarah McDonagh – sax, flute
Alex Black – bass
Ashley James – drums
Born in Cape Town Philip Clouts has loved South African jazz from childhood. The music has influenced his playing and composition and led to his part in developing a synthesis of the funky township music and European harmonies of his new life in Dorset.
Clouts created a solid body of work with African roots – he has been a key member of the popular London-based world jazz ensemble Zubop and its offshoot Zubop Gambia, a collaboration with BBC World Music award winner Juldeh Camara. He has also played extensively with his self-named Philip Clouts Quartet.
"Hits an authentic groove and holds it, building successfully as Hugh Masakela or Abdullah Ibrahim’s bands do, underpinned with a rhythmic firmness and drive that carries everything forward with zest." - Alyn Shipton, Gramophone
“Emotionally-felt, highly listenable melodies and improvisations which colourfully lift the spirits” - Adrian Pallant
“Precise ebullience and relaxed funkiness” – The Guardian
