In Natasha Brown's debut novel Assembly - one of the most talked-about novels of the last few years, - she tells the story of a Black British woman questioning the life she has assembled around her.
There is expectation everywhere: to act with civility in a hostile environment; to step out into a world of Go Home vans; to go to Oxbridge, get an education, start a career; to do all the right things. Buy a flat. Buy art. Buy a sort of happiness. But above all, keep your head down. Keep quiet. And keep going.
As our narrator prepares to attend a lavish party at her boyfriend's family estate, set deep in the English countryside, she begins to consider the carefully assembled pieces of herself. As the minutes tick down and the future beckons, she can't escape the question: is it time to take it all apart?
Natasha will be talking about her experiences of writing
Assembly, about her process and motivations, and about the journey to
publication and the reception the book has received in the wider world.
