CFF: We The Hated (15)

Dir. Rich Felgate | 2026 | 88 mins | English

How far would you go for something you believed in, and what would you be prepared to lose?

WE, THE HATED takes audiences behind the headlines and roadblocks to tell the inside story of Just Stop Oil, one of the most divisive protest movements in recent British history. Director Rich Felgate gained extraordinary access to the movement. With his girlfriend a founding member, his personal connection gives the film an unusually close perspective as it follows four activists, Indigo, Mark, Phoebe and Jane, confronting the consequences of their decision to take direct action. As protests become increasingly controversial and the authorities respond, the activists must weigh the personal cost of their actions against what they see as the potentially catastrophic consequences of doing nothing.

The World Premiere was selected to open Sheffield DocFest 2026, placing the film at the centre of a national conversation about climate activism, civil disobedience and our right to protest.

Urgent, intimate and deliberately challenging, WE, THE HATED doesn't simply ask audiences to agree or disagree with Just Stop Oil. Instead, it takes us behind the public image of the movement and asks bigger questions: What makes an ordinary person become an activist? When does protest become disruption? How should a democracy respond to civil disobedience? And how far would any of us go for something we believed was too important to ignore?
