CFF: The Education of Jane Cumming (CS)

Dir. Sophie Heldman | 2026 | 114 mins | English with English Subtitles

Edinburgh, 1810. Governesses Jane Pirie and Marianne Woods embark on an ambitious dream: opening a school for girls and creating an independent life for themselves. Their carefully constructed world begins to unravel with the arrival of Jane Cumming, a new pupil and orphan whose aristocratic grandmother places her in their care.

As pressures around class, race and deeply suppressed emotion intensify, an irreversible accusation of lesbianism threatens the women’s relationship, reputation and livelihoods. Based on Lillian Faderman’s book Scotch Verdict: The Real-Life Story That Inspired The Children’s Hour, Sophie Heldman’s period drama stars Flora Nicholson, Clare Dunne, Mia Tharia and Fiona Shaw.
