The Director’s Cut, The Great Trek of the Transport Party, brings to life the opening chapter in an epic story linking the mines of Cornwall and Mexico. Two centuries ago, 8 steam engines and tons of equipment left Falmouth in 4 wooden sailing ships and was then hauled 266 miles to the silver mines of Real de Monte high in the Sierra Madre Oriental.
For over a year the Transport Party struggled against political problems, atrocious terrain, the climate, fatal diseases and financial constraints. The cost to life was shocking. The story is one of tragedy but ultimately triumph, when the first steam engine was started in August 1826, heralding the dawn of the Industrial Revolution in a region of Mexico that enjoys close ties with Cornwall today.
“The epic journey of the first British engineers and miners, is a tale of endeavour, fortitude and optimism.” The late Giles Paxman, former British Ambassador to Mexico.
