Award-winning British photographer James A. Grant uses his lens to explore the culture, community and quiet moments that exist where land meets sea. His work asks you to slow down and look again — at the things we take for granted, the choices we make without thinking, the people doing extraordinary work in places most of us never look.
His project Reinventing The Ride began with a question that is deceptively simple: what is a surfboard actually made of, and does it have to be made that way? From there, it became something much richer. A portrait series. A document of an emerging movement within surf culture — craftspeople, designers and surfers who are rethinking the relationship between surfing and sustainability, one surfboard board at a time.
Whilst most surfers live the oxymoron of riding on equipment made from some of the most toxic materials on Earth, this series aims to challenge that contradiction. It seeks to bring to the attention of the surf and ocean community that change is necessary and to explore what solutions already exist, and who is leading them.
During the exhibition, the audience will engage with each shaper through a series of images accompanied by audio headsets in which they discuss key questions: Why? How? Is the technology already here? How do we change the surf industry? This show presents the most comprehensive visual collection to date of UK shapers making the changes in surfboard production.
