Dir. Mark Jenkin | 2025 | 114 mins | English
‘A Cornish modern classic. Eerie, heart-breaking, wonderful.’—Mark Kermode
When a fishing boat, the Rose of Nevada, lost with all hands 30 years ago, mysteriously reappears in the old harbour of a forgotten Cornish village, for those who remember, it’s surely a sign. The boat must go out to sea again and maybe then the luck of the devastated village will turn.
Young father Nick (George MacKay) and enigmatic newcomer Liam (Callum Turner) join captain Murgey (Francis Magee), and they head to sea. But when they return, satisfied with their haul, something is amiss—they’ve slipped back in time, and the villagers greet them as if they are the original crew.
Rose of Nevada is Cornish filmmaker Mark Jenkin’s hotly anticipated and critically acclaimed follow-up to his BAFTA-award-winning first feature Bait (2019) and Enys Men (2022). Unique among British feature filmmakers for the analogue way in which he crafts his films, Jenkin once again serves as writer, director, director of photography, editor, sound designer and score composer.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ 'An enigmatic drama steeped in loss, memory and the unsettling rhythms of coastal life.' - The Guardian
⭐⭐⭐⭐'A film you can virtually feel.' - Empire
This screening will be accompanied by a Live Score from Director Mark Jenkin and Musician Dion Star (often working together as The Cornish Sound Unit).
About The Cornish Sound Unit:
Having recently received the British Independent Film Award (BIFA) for Best Sound for Enys Men (2022), The Cornish Sound Unit developed through collaborative practice sessions between the duo, and sees them stationed at a table, armed with cue sheets and surrounded by tape loops, analogue synths and field recordings as the film plays on the big screen behind them.
Due to the analogue nature of the equipment, the number of variables of the arrangement and the likeness of the tape loop to a ‘wild animal’, no two performances of the score are the same. It is this rawness that permeates each live set, allowing audiences to experience the disquiet of the film in a potent new way.
Part of The Poly's Cornish Stories On Screen film
season. With support of the BFI Film Audience Network, awarding funds from
the National Lottery in order to bring this project to more audiences
across the UK.
