Cornwall based artist, Beth Richardson, reflects on spaces in her often large scale paintings. Exploring vessels and voids, she invites viewers to sink, float, and dive into unknown and ambiguous worlds somewhere between the real and the imagined. Colour fields become experiential, domesticity becomes dreamlike and empty spaces come alive with narratives of your own making.
Autobiographical in their infancy, paintings begin as reflections of home life and then expand and exhale, stepping through portals of the imagination where the boundaries of the domestic and the transcendental become blurred. Moving from the UK to Portugal, becoming a mother, and moving back again 12 years later has influenced a collection of works searching for stillness in a changing landscape of both inner and outer worlds.
Born in Hampshire in 1980, Beth graduated with first-class honours in Painting and Drawing from the University of Gloucestershire.
Over the past 26 years, she has exhibited internationally showing in Art Fairs in Milan, Stockholm, Brussels, Amsterdam New York, Singapore, Texas and Boston. Her work is held in permanent collections at the Greenstage Gallery in the UK, Palma Art Gallery in Italy, and in numerous private collections worldwide.
She has recently won the Evolver Feature Prize with her painting 'Painting' in the RWA open Exhibition. Exploring vessels and voids my work invites viewers into empty spaces, alive with the potential to be filled. Familiar, everyday objects are re-contextualised within fields of colour tempting us to forget what we know and respond to the ordinary in a new way. As we follow our own narratives into fields of colour, black holes of tilted boats, folds of clothes or undisturbed golden waters, our own stories become the subject as we explore our connection with our inner and outer worlds.
Creating surreal and often dreamlike imagery she is exploring the crossover of the mundane with the extraordinary, bringing
magic to the ordinary, often over looked places and things that surround us. Each
piece serves as a reminder to pause and reflect on the simple, daily rituals
that shape our lives. By highlighting the beauty and simplicity inherent in
daily objects and tasks, Beth encourages a deeper appreciation for the world around
us and our potential to fill these spaces with joy and wonder
