Dir. John G. Avildsen | 1976 | 121 mins | English
Rocky is one of those rare films that transcends its genre. Often remembered for its famous training montage, Bill Conti's soaring soundtrack and an intimate character study about self-worth, perseverance and hope.
Released in 1976, Rocky arrived at a pivotal moment in American history. Following Vietnam, Watergate and economic uncertainty, audiences embraced a hero who wasn't wealthy, powerful or extraordinary. Rocky Balboa is an ordinary working-class man who simply wants the chance to prove he is capable of more. His triumph is not measured by winning a fight, but by discovering his own dignity.
Written by Sylvester Stallone, who famously refused to sell the screenplay unless he starred in it himself, Rocky became an extraordinary independent success. Made on a modest budget, it went on to win three Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and launched one of cinema's most enduring franchises.
Nearly fifty years later, Rocky offers more than nostalgia. It provides an opportunity to reflect on how cinema has portrayed heroes and whether the classic underdog story still has a place in today's world. In an era dominated by superheroes, franchises and chosen ones, Rocky reminds us of the power of ordinary people achieving extraordinary things through determination and resilience.
Following the screening, join us for 'Rocky at 50: The End of the Underdog?'.
This special discussion explores how Rocky redefined the American hero and became one of cinema's most enduring cultural touchstones. Nearly fifty years on, does the American Dream still hold the same power? Why are audiences still drawn to underdog stories, and have today's heroes been replaced by superheroes, franchises and larger-than-life icons? We'll also consider what Rocky reveals about America's changing identity and ask what an underdog story looks like today in Britain, and in Cornwall, where resilience, community and opportunity are shaped by very different economic and social realities.
