SURFILMUSIC is more than a documentary, it’s an intimate insight into Jack Johnson’s evolution from rising North Shore surf star, to iconic surf filmmaker to world-renowned, stadium filling, 25 million album-selling musician.
‘When I think about making things - music or film - friendship is the most important part.’ - Jack Johnson
Directed by longtime friend and collaborator Emmet Malloy, the film traces how Johnson’s early years making surf films with close friends - think Thicker than Water and September Sessions with the likes of Kelly Slater, Chris Malloy, Rob Machado - became the bedrock for a broad creative life - capturing moments in and out of the water that later surfaced in his songwriting. Blending rare footage from these formative surf films with personal and family archives as well as present-day reflections, the film weaves together how lived experience, friendship, and exploration shaped the sound and stories behind the music.
Featuring Jack Johnson, Kelly Slater, Rob Machado, Gerry Lopez, Chris Malloy, G. Love, Ben Harper, John Florence, Emmett Malloy, Kim Johnson, and more, with a beautiful score by Jack Johnson and Hermanos Gutiérrez. In loving memory of Tamayo Perry.
