Paul Ryan's recent work involves abstract colourful paintings on wood – new panels that have replaced his work on found wood. Paul wants to completely own the painting now without reference to a specific location.
Pouring paint liquifies forms and shapes, control becomes temporary or inconsistent and skills are tested, knowledge pushed, so that the works find definition, in the end. Fluidity in the paintings also describes a state of mind and physical adjustments, - a response to issues, both environmental and personal. Allowing access to freedom of thought and gestures. Non-figurative subject matter is the only way forward for painting. One level to read the paintings is in the gesture of the brushstrokes that will reference; Landscape, the sea, weather, time of day.
Paul is influenced by other artists who were colourists; Matisse, Heron, Avery, to name some, but developing his own language is his principal goal. He works wet into wet paint generally so there is an immediacy about the surface quality; acrylics have a strong range of modern colours including fluorescents.
Having retired completely from his career as a Senior lecturer and International standards verifier, Paul is totally absorbed with my making process; observing and recording then transforming findings in the studio from memory.
